The shock of the collapsing sub-prime market is a wake-up call to us all. The Americans have been living dangerously on credit and both they and their economic partners have been in denial over it. The question is whether this is the end of an era; whether the hegemonic power of the U.S., already weakened by its actions in Iraq, has now also squandered its economic clout.
