Aufgrund der arbeitsteiligen Organisation und der Charakteristik der variantenreichen Serienproduktion existieren in der Automobil-Industrie für die verschiedenen Manufacturing Execution System (MES)-Ebenen eigene IT-Systeme. Diese Systeme arbeiten heute eigenständig, meist ohne Datenaustausch und Verbindung zu den anderen MES-Komponenten. Ziel der Automobil-Hersteller ist er es, die Einzelsysteme in den kommenden Jahren miteinander zu verbinden, um damit existierende Synergiepotentiale auszuschöpfen.
